Market research firm NPD Display Search estimates that from 2014 to 2017, the annual growth rate (CAGR) of high power LED for street lights, direct type backlight, sport light and other high-brightness applications will reach 13%; the “Quarterly LED Lighting and Display Supply / Demand Report” predicted that demand high power LED will grow from 18.5 billion pieces in 2014 to 27 billion pieces in 2017.

In 2014, high power LED street light applications will account for 28% of total shipments, followed by TV backlight and spotlight, each account for 27%, but NPD Display Search forecasts that in 2017 the street light will take 41% of high power LED market share, followed by spotlight (21%) and TV backlighting (15%).

LED analysts of NPD Display Search She Qingwei said: "The high power LED price is higher than middle or small power LED, but LED light source takes only a small part of the total cost in street light. In order to achieve high reliability and performance LED street light, most manufacturers uses high-power LED for better reliability, thus promotes the rapid development of high-power LED. Moreover, because the rise in energy costs, in order to achieve energy efficient and high-brightness lighting, many governments’ demands will also promote the growth of LED."

To improve thermal conductivity, high-power LED adopts ceramic substrate instead of the original PPA material; while in order to avoid the influence of humidity, it uses glass to replace the silicone encapsulation. She Qingwei said: "The heat management is very important during the use of high power LED, because it impact the product reliability."

She Qingwei added: "High-power LED with good sales, we predict the penetration rate in general lighting and direct type backlight will be improved this year. However, this market will continue to be dominated by several major LED manufacturers, including Philips Lumileds, Osram and Cree."
